While the year 2000 marked my introduction to organized fandom, writing fan fiction was something I'd been doing for a long time. Here are some of the moments of shame highlights.

The Mary Sues

Jenna Brunskill: The TWIN sister of Jerry, the drummer from a band my friend and I liked to fic. Jenna had waist-length dark brown hair. Her eyes changed color when she was angry. Her parents totally didn't understand her.

Michelle Riker: William Riker's little sister. Feuded with Captain Picard (he totally didn't understand her), Wesley Crusher (he was jealous that she was more intelligent, she bested him all the time at Star Fleet academy), Doctor Crusher (she took Wesley's side). Got it on with O'Brien.

Lorelei(!) Hapsburg: Seriously fucked up AU written after having watched a seriously fucked Alternate History thing in World Religions class. BigBadDictator (OMG! Hitler's grandson) was trying to take over the world. Thank goodness Lorelei Hapsburg and a synthpop band were there to thwart him.

First Attempt at Slash

Duran Duran: The bad guy from Duran Duran's really weird/bad movie captures Nick and John and spirits them aways to his island near India. They are locked (naked, OMG!) away in a dungeon, and while they are fearing for their lives, they make out and share some nipple action.

I remember being so stressed out because I thought about (and wrote) two guys together. I lived in a crappy small town and later, a really bland suburb. It was the 80's, so no internet (a friend of mine's dad had a very early form... like bulletin boards or something)and while fan magazines existed, I certainly wasn't aware of them. Oh, the days of darkness.

I shudder to think what I would have been like if I'd had a computer and internet access in 1985.

If it makes you feel any better, in 8th greade a friend of mine and I used to write Remington Steele MarySues in which I was Laura's cousin and along with my best friend, would scheme to get Laura and Remington into the sack with each other.
