I've been watching Supernatural. MORE LIKE SUPER-FINE AM I RITE. Wow.

The storytelling is excellent, no mystic mumbo-jumbo. No whiney, wishy-washy psychic-- though I'm sure fandom brings that around. Gritty and mean and scary--zomg, getting on a plane they *know* will crash. AND THE WRITING PULLED IT OFF IN A WAY THAT DIDN'T SET OFF MY ACK!SO!STUPID! WANK-O-METER.

I love how the random characters aren't idiots either. You're no forrest ranger. If only there were someone hot who wasn't a Winchester so there could be slash I enjoy.

Opera-centrically, aka only a pro to me, this series is hitting three kink buttons hard. 1. Gritty boys! 2. sibling understory. 3. That scene-- SPOILER FOR 1ST SEASON AHOY-- in the finale, where demonposessed!Dad is about to slaughter Dean, and Dean pleads with trappedinside!Dad, "Don't let him kill me." AKSJljfklsdjflksdjflksjflksjdflksjdflksjdf. DUDES. The fear and the pleading and the no hope anymore. Wow. The salt trapped them.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Word of advice: STAY AWAY FROM SPN FANDOM. In the sense of: don't read the meta. I should probably follow my own advice, but alas, I always fail.

But otherwise, yeah, the show is fabulous. I used to hate Jensen Ackles with a passion, because I watched Days and Eric Brady was so. damn. stupid. And annoying. And I thought Jensen was a talentless hack paired with a poorly written character, which is a lethal combination. I actually would've been into SPN way earlier if it hadn't been my lingering hatred over Days, but then I fell for the show and I luvs Jensen Ackles and Dean Winchester now.

Are you on S2 now?

NO DON'T TALK ABOUT THE FIRST SEASON I JUST GOT IT.

I kid, I kid. I didn't read. It looks awesome though and having no problems with incest (yes, I know that's putting it mildly), I am all aboard the slash train. Well, I will be, I reckon.

There are so many elements I like. The cheap motels, the cheap clothes, the diners, the fact that most episodes are set in small midwestern towns. I love the endless "road trip," and that aspect seems to resonate with a lot of non- U.S. fans. I often thought you might like this show since you once said that you do a lot of traveling and stay in a lot of hotels!

The hunters are blue-collar or rednecks. We have yet to see an upper-class or middle-class demon hunter. The good fan writers really get into the gritty side of the Winchesters' lifestyle, going hungry, doing with medical care, living in awful places, etc.

I like the music, the car and the gloomy lighting too.

I like it more than, say, a Twilight Zone episode or a horror movie, in that the viewer can get invested in the family. SPN works on characterization as well as horror. My interest in the family can carry me through a patch of less interesting episodes.

They have had some very good guest stars, who won the hearts of the fans, and we all mourn that Kripke keeps killing them off!!

I must be one of the very few fans who thinks Jared is a much better actor than Jensen. I think Jared's acting is more natural and subtle; he is much better about using his eyes and facial expressions and voice to get things across. Jensen strikes me as a corny, limited soap actor getting by on his looks. Eh, that's my own opinion. 99.999% of SPN fandom thinks he merits an Emmy. And the two actors together really sell the characters. They work well together.

I get tired of the fandom, though. Strangely enough, this show about a couple of blue-collar mid-western boys seems to attract all the middle-to-upper-class, well-educated, well-employed, urban "intellectuals" to the yard. Don't read the meta. It's too pompous and irritating.

However, SPN does have a number of wacko fans who provide mass quantities of entertainment for us all. And there are some really excellent writers, gen and slash.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who gets irritated.

I remember you suggesting this to me (which is why I made sure to praise it so quickly--good call.

The gloomy lighting is excellent. That's a crabby point for me with a lot of horror stuff. Bad lighting is used for false suspense. From the little I've seen of SPN, it's usually the reverse. Instead of not being able to clearly see the monster, the monster perfectly visiable, it's the exit(!)that's hidden.

Your take on Jensen is interesting too. He's is a bit corny and limited, but I took that as characterization. Like the first season was spent reminding us of all the truama heaped upon Sam, but really Dean went through most of that too, and I just pictured that post-mom dying/house-burning-down Dad thrust a lot of parenting duties onto Dean, and so he became a person who knows he has to provide emotional support but never had a daily contact with a good role model to learn how to handle heavy emotions. So he's stilted and limited and relies on cliche expression. Yard, meet the new middle-to-upper-class, well-educated, well-employed, urban "psuedo-intellectual"

That is something I had not considered, that Jensen is deliberately acting the role of a character who is emotionally stunted. I will have to reconsider. I'll have to check out some other TV shows of his. I never saw him on SV, which I believe he did just before SPN.

Well, I don't remember him being subtle on Days either, but Soaps really aren't the showcase for that.
