Mofic gave me W .

Comment here and I'll give you a letter, too. Only the first 26 responders are eligible for this deal.

1. Wrestling.

That was a gimme, huh? Where to even begin expressing my love of wrestling? I watched as a kid, drifted away for awhile during the neon and mulleted 80’s, returned as an adult at the perfect time—ECW was going strong, WCW had not descended completely into suck yet, WWE had the rise of Austin and Rock, and DX, Hardyz, Kane and E&C on the midcard, and storylines that didn’t defy Earth Logic.

When wrestling is good it’s divine. An ROH match that’s like ballet and angry sex and every visceral screech of revenge that’s ever surged though your lizard brain; a heel turn that feels like *I’m* that one betrayed; a suicide dive that makes the wrestler seem half-hawk, chasing prey; Eddie’s 3 Amigos; the Royal Rumble match between Angle and Benoit; Christian telling an Louisana crowd that there’s French-speaking people in Canada too--- except avec teeth; old school Joey Styles screaming “Omigod!’; Jericho’s ‘Break the Walls Down’ intro music. I could type for days, yammering on and on about all the moments that made me so thankful I *get* wrestling.

It’s fictionalized violence, narrative storytelling, and half-dressed good looking people slathered in baby oil touching each other. It’s Shakespeare playing to the great unwashed in the nosebleed seats.

2. Writing.

The gimmeness continues. Before I could write, I told stories. Ever since I could write, I’ve written stories. It’s not a want to or a have to. It’s an is. Writing is love. Writing is soul. Writing is in me the way wrestling is in Angle—for better and worse. It drives me high, it shoves me low.

When I find a unique way to describe something or solve a plot hole or write an opener that’s like a punch in the face, I feel complete. It’s more than satisfaction. It’s a feeling on wholeness, a rightness. And, lucky for me, it’s only partially an ego thing, because when I read unique descriptions or clever plot twists or an opener that punches my face in, WOW. I love it.

I’m awed by the way writing is more than its words. How 5 words can mean the same as 50 words or the same as nothing. How one sentence repeated at the end of a novel can feel tragically or joyously different from its earlier appearance.

3. Words.

One of the ideas in 1984 was that the government was deleting words from the vocabulary of ordinary citizens. If the people didn’t have certain words, they wouldn’t have the ideas behind them. That seriously creeped me out, and because of that, I’ve become a word-hog.

Like most wanna-be smarty pants, I first focused on big, fancy words. You had to be extra mcsmarty to know and use those. But as I smartened up, I realized words ‘power comes from their honesty, their unflinchingness, their ability to create or enchant or horrify. In that sense, day-to-day words almost always outgun the fancier ones.

4.Wendy’s
Wendy’s chocolate Frosty is 99cent worth of Heaven. The rest of her menu is cheaper than most, way tastier than most, and less calorically deplorable (relative of course), and it’s possible to get a baked potato and fresh fruit there. Bonus: Wendy’s are usually cleaner than other fast food joints.

5. Water.

Drinking-wise, I think America would be a better place if everyone switched 1 of their daily sodas for a glass of water. I aim for a gallon a day, and I feel it on days I don’t. It cleans and refreshes you, every single one of your precious cells needs it. Drink!

Bodies of-wise, I love lakes and rivers and oceans. The way most people look at the sky and imagine or become inspired or see their hopes and dreams, I’m like that with water. In the summer, I’m at the lake a couple of blocks from house nearly everyday. It’s my weather guide, my nature observatory, my gym (I <3 swimming and I run the trails),the semi-silver beta I share ideas with.

6. Wrestlers named Chris.
This was added to my LJ interests as sort of a joke. I’m intrigued by names and “Chris” is all over wrestling. Plus, the somewhat holy trinity of Christian, Jericho and Benoit are all Chrises. Now that Benoit’s gone, and the other two don’t meet in canon, it’s just another Grand Thing To Love About Wrestling That’s Gone.

7.My Nephews who have names beginning with Ws.

It’s weird how love is automatic sometimes. Like, I’m not particularly interested in kids, but those two little guys have me by the heartstrings.

8.WHAT.
My favorite bit of ‘net speak. Incredulous and condescending all at once

ETA, last two.

9. Wishtheworst.
Offically the coolest broad in the universe. Equal parts snark and super decent person. Gifted writer, amazinly well-read, owner of orange washcloths. If the internet were high school, I'd lurk around her locker.

10. The Web.

Ah, internetz. I totally choo-choo choose you over cable, TiVo, even my iPod. You made weird easy. You make porn easy. You make finding people who want to discuss any subject easy. You make buying out-of-print Travis books possible. You provide people for me to point and laugh at. You provide lunch coupons. Phone book? Maps? Encyclopedia? WHAT Forget that crap, the internet will do all that and more.

ME ME ME ME!

ballet and angry sex and every visceral screech of revenge that’s ever surged though your lizard brain

ZOMG. And I'm like a;lfdjklasfd at what you wrote. I'm only so very very YARGH at it now because I was SO in love with it then. Oh the memories. ;_;

When it's good, it truly is some of the most amazing stuff ever.

One of the ideas in 1984 was that the government was deleting words from the vocabulary of ordinary citizens. If the people didn’t have certain words, they wouldn’t have the ideas behind them. That seriously creeped me out

ZOMG x 2. SAME HERE. Same. Here.

LOL @ #8. I have too many to name a favorite, but WHAT is definitely one of them. I feel its true potential can only be harnessed if there is no punctuation.

This was fun to read! I gave you W for wrestling, of course, and was interested to see what you did with it, as well as the others.

You still have to come up with 2 more.

Re: 1 - always remember that Shakespeare always played to the nosebleeds (or rather the groundlings).

Re: 3 - If I'm talking in RL I lose words sometimes and it's so absolutely terrifying so I totally get that.

Re: 5 - Another biochemist I met at a conference actually wants to be a photographer, and some of the shots he's put up are actually breath-taking. Link is here - http://www.lightoverwater.co.uk/blog/photos/ if you want to have a look.
