Aug. 25th, 2010 07:06 pmDay 09 - A book you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving: In the Lake of the Woods - Tim Obrien.
First off, it's from book club which is always a bad thing. Second, it's Tim Obrien, who is a good writer-- too good, the Things They Carried is a hard story to get through because it wears on your heart. Last thing I wanted for a summer read was a heartbreaking, heavy read.
Instead, I got a super creepy murder mystery with crumudgeon-y jerks and skeesy local politicians and lots of good writing. It's sort of patterned on a true crime book-- at least that's the vibe I got. Like the chapter headers were the kind of legal terms tossed around on TV shows, words meant to be sinister, and they are when thinking about the events of the murder, but also cheesy and sad in how death = lurid thrills for some.
***
Finally caught up some on wrestling. Daniel Bryan is back (yay), Serena is gone (boo), and on Raw, Orton, Morrison, Dibiase JR and Sheamus re-enacted the Judgement of Paris with Sheamus as Paris being offered, perfect abs by Randy, perfect-er abs by John, and perfectly reasonable abs by Teddy in exchange for a golden belt.
