9/11

Last year, I read a story about a family who decided to honor 9/11 with a day of charity. It's so easy to compound tragedy by reacting with more tragedy-- wars, hatred, racism, fear, wire-tapping, removing basic rights. Why not rise above the tragedy? Why not use it as a impetus for better, not an excuse for worse?

Inspired, I started small. I donated $9.11 to a hunger relief charity. This year, having had more time to plan, I made larger donations to a couple of places. Nothing major, but drops in the bucket.

I know I harp about charitable giving a lot here in lj. It's just that I believe charitable giving is the ultimate in free speech. It's as meaningful to democracy as voting.

Yes, we need leaders to support causes we believe in, but leaders need people at the front lines. People *doing* the good.(and by *doing* I don't mean soley giving money. Time, education, support counts too). And, really I don't want good-doing to be dependant on any government or any leader, even one I may have voted for. Leaders die, laws change, but a spirit of open-hearted willingness to help can be passed on through generations.

Doing something small is better than waiting on the government to do something big.

Top 4 songs that I like pretending are about vampires, but are really about other things.

4. the Toadies -Possum Kingdom. Probably actually about a serial killer, or at least a really messed up dude.

3. Gordon Lightfoot--Sundown. Just Gordo being a badass, but why is he so insistant about waiting for dusk?

2. Pigface/NiN-- Suck. Lots of fun imagery, but likely it's just skinny meth-addicts trying to get laid.

1. Duran Duran-- Notorious. I need this blood to survive Hmmm. Is Le Bon chronicling the hazards of fame or of being undead?
