Writing ramble, as usual
Feb. 28th, 2004 04:28 pmThe focus story in my reading group was pretty bad. It was one of those Main Character is the Center of the Universe fics. It was weird to see a bad form of fan fic get used in original fiction.
That kind of story has always bugged me. Even setting aside the usually lame premise, (Oh! NO! Randy Orton is a cutter!) I just can't buy a group of individuals reacting with the same intensity to a personal situation. Some people care alot, some a little, and some can't be bothered. And those distinctions don't always match how close people are to one another.
So it made me wonder if on a subconscious level, the writer isn't making all the characters interested in the happenings because in a way, all the minor characters make up an audience. Obviously the writer is interested in the drama--at least enough to be writing about it, anyway. Writers want people to be interested in their stuff. Maybe minor characters who are all up in the main character's drama are really just the writer's cheerleading squad.
